Separate logical pages from physical frames
Each color and letter identifies a different process. Each numbered slot on the left is a physical frame. Page numbers restart at 0 for each process.
Contiguous placement is possible
Here the processes happen to occupy adjacent frames. Paging does not require this arrangement.
Process B: page 0 → frame 1
This is an alternative, scattered placement. Read row 0 in B’s page table: it stores frame number 1. Follow the highlighted path to physical frame 1.
Process B: page 1 → frame 4
This is an alternative, scattered placement. Read row 1 in B’s page table: it stores frame number 4. Follow the highlighted path to physical frame 4.
Process B: page 2 → frame 10
This is an alternative, scattered placement. Read row 2 in B’s page table: it stores frame number 10. Follow the highlighted path to physical frame 10.
Process B: page 3 → frame 8
This is an alternative, scattered placement. Read row 3 in B’s page table: it stores frame number 8. Follow the highlighted path to physical frame 8.
The page table connects the two views
B’s consecutive logical pages occupy frames 1, 4, 10, and 8. Other processes use the remaining frames. Each process has its own page table.
